Frontline vs Golden Ocean β€” Tanker or Dry Bulk?

Frontline (FRO) vs Golden Ocean (GOGL) comparison. VLCC tankers vs BDI dry bulk β€” which Oslo shipping stock after Hormuz? Signal-driven analysis.

Quick Verdict

For Middle East oil trade: Frontline (FRO)

Frontline operates the world's largest VLCC fleet and is the purest play on Middle East crude oil shipping rates. The Hormuz crisis delivered extraordinary short-term earnings β€” now fading as the strait reopens.

For China and global trade: Golden Ocean (GOGL)

Golden Ocean is a pure dry bulk play tracked by the Baltic Dry Index (BDI). Less exposed to Hormuz risk, more exposed to China infrastructure spending and global commodity trade.

Post-Hormuz: Frontline Loses Its Premium

The Hormuz crisis was an extraordinary windfall for Frontline. VLCC rates hit $280k/day β€” roughly 5x the normal rate β€” as tankers rerouted around Africa. With Hormuz reopening today (17 April), VLCC rates are falling rapidly. Frontline's Q2 2026 earnings will still be strong due to the crisis period, but Q3 will show normalisation.

Golden Ocean was largely unaffected by Hormuz β€” dry bulk routes don't pass through the strait. BDI at reflects normal global trade conditions, and Golden Ocean enters this period without the post-crisis hangover that Frontline faces.

Signycle view: Post-Hormuz, Golden Ocean is the better risk-adjusted hold. Frontline faces VLCC rate normalisation pressure. The next strong buy for either stock comes when VLCC falls below $30k/day (Frontline) or BDI falls below 1,000 (Golden Ocean).
