Wacker Chemie — Silicon & PMI Cycle

Signycle Research6 min readFrankfurt XETRA
📸Snapshot article — figures reflect data at publication. See live-signals.html for current values.

Wacker Chemie is a global leader in specialty silicon chemicals — producing polysilicon for solar cells and semiconductors, silicones for construction, automotive and personal care applications, and specialty polymers for construction chemicals. Listed on Frankfurt XETRA, Wacker is uniquely positioned at the intersection of three cyclical forces: the solar energy installation cycle (polysilicon), the global PMI cycle (silicones) and the construction cycle (polymer dispersions).

Signycle Signal Thresholds
BUY signal: Polysilicon prices fall below $8/kg AND PMI below 48 — entry signal
SELL signal: Polysilicon rises above $20/kg AND solar installation boom accelerates — exit zone

Polysilicon: Solar Cycle Exposure

Wacker is one of the world's largest polysilicon producers — supplying ultra-high-purity silicon to solar cell manufacturers and semiconductor wafer producers. Solar polysilicon prices collapsed from $30+/kg (2022) to below $5/kg (2024) due to massive Chinese overcapacity additions. This price crash devastated Wacker's polysilicon earnings. When solar installation demand grows faster than Chinese supply additions, polysilicon prices recover and Wacker's margins normalise.

Silicones: The PMI-Linked Segment

Wacker's Silicones division — producing silicone fluids, elastomers, resins and functional silanes for 50,000+ customers globally — tracks global manufacturing PMI closely. Silicones are used in automotive sealants, construction weatherproofing, personal care products and industrial coatings. When PMI exceeds 52, silicone volumes and pricing improve. The silicones segment provides more stable revenues than polysilicon due to its diversified end-market exposure.

Polymers: Construction Chemical Link

Wacker's Polymers division produces vinyl acetate-ethylene dispersions used in construction adhesives, exterior insulation systems and carpet backing. Construction chemical demand follows European and global construction PMI. The EU's energy efficiency renovation wave — retrofitting buildings with external insulation — creates structural demand for Wacker's dispersions independent of new construction cycles.

Semiconductor Polysilicon: The Premium Niche

Wacker also produces hyper-pure polysilicon for semiconductor wafer manufacturers — a much smaller volume but significantly higher margin than solar polysilicon. Semiconductor polysilicon demand tracks the global chip cycle. This premium semiconductor exposure provides a higher-value component within the polysilicon business that is less affected by Chinese solar overcapacity.
