What Is an Aksjesparekonto?
An aksjesparekonto (ASK) is a tax-wrapper account for Norwegian private investors, introduced in 2017. It allows you to hold and trade Norwegian-listed shares and equity funds within the account — and to move between investments without triggering capital gains tax at the point of sale. Tax is only due when you withdraw gains from the account, not when you sell one holding and buy another.
This deferred taxation is the core benefit: you can rotate capital from a position that has appreciated significantly into a new position without immediately losing 22% of the gain to capital gains tax.
The Rules
- Eligible investments: Norwegian-listed shares and equity funds (minimum 80% equities). Foreign shares listed on Oslo Børs are also eligible if they qualify as "aksjer" under Norwegian tax rules.
- Tax on withdrawal: Capital gains above the "skjermingsfradrag" (risk-free return allowance) are taxed at 37.84% (2024 rate — the effective rate after the 1.72x multiplier on dividend/gains income).
- No limit on account size: There is no maximum amount you can hold in an ASK.
- Multiple accounts allowed: You can have ASK accounts at multiple brokers simultaneously.
- Losses: Losses can be realised tax-free within the account but cannot be used to offset gains outside the account until you close the ASK.
Why the ASK Is Perfect for Cyclical Investing
Cyclical investing involves frequent rotation — buying shipping stocks at troughs, selling at peaks, and redeploying into energy or seafood. Without an ASK, each rotation triggers a capital gains event at 37.84%. With an ASK, you can rotate freely without tax friction.
Example: You buy MPCC at NOK 2.05 in an ASK. It rises to NOK 31.45 — a 1,434% gain. You sell within the ASK and buy Equinor at its 2020 trough. The full NOK 31.45 per share is redeployed — you have not lost 37.84% of the gain to tax. The compounding effect over multiple cycles is dramatic.

The Skjermingsfradrag — Your Tax-Free Return
Each year, a portion of your ASK gains is exempt from tax — the skjermingsfradrag (shielding deduction). This is calculated as your invested capital multiplied by a government-set risk-free rate (typically close to the Norwegian government bond yield, around 3–5% in recent years). Unused skjermingsfradrag from prior years accumulates and can be used against future gains.
For long-term cyclical investors, this allowance can meaningfully reduce the eventual tax bill at withdrawal — particularly if you hold through periods where the risk-free rate is high.
✅ No tax on gains when rotating between Norwegian shares and funds
✅ Skjermingsfradrag reduces eventual tax
✅ Ideal for multi-cycle rotation strategies
⚠️ Tax applies on gains at withdrawal (37.84% effective rate in 2024)
⚠️ Only Norwegian-qualifying assets eligible
